Articulated, tracked and vehicle mounted booms
Cherry picker hire
A cherry picker is a boom-type lift: a platform on a jointed hydraulic arm that reaches up and over obstacles, roof edges and plant that a straight-up lift cannot clear. Pick your working height, check the outreach, and book online. Hire one for a few days or a few months, with the price shown before you add it to the basket.
Boom lift is the machine type. Cherry picker is the everyday name, used most accurately for jointed, up-and-over booms; straight telescopic booms are usually just called boom lifts. Scissor and mast lifts go straight up and are never cherry pickers.

Questions
- Is a cherry picker the same as a boom lift?
- Not quite. Boom lift is the machine type: a platform on a hydraulic arm, either articulated (jointed, reaching up and over) or telescopic (a straight boom for maximum outreach). Cherry picker is the everyday name rather than a technical category, and it most accurately describes the jointed, up-and-over kind: articulated booms, van, truck and trailer mounts and spider lifts. Telescopic booms are usually just called boom lifts. So every cherry picker is a boom-type lift, but not every boom lift is what the trade means by a cherry picker, and people search for both names. Scissor lifts and mast lifts only go straight up and are never cherry pickers.
- How much does it cost to rent a cherry picker?
- Each machine page leads with the price for a week's hire, inc and ex VAT, and lists hires from 2 days in a table of prices by hire length. Delivery and collection are priced by your postcode before you pay. The optional damage waiver is included by default, and you can remove it by uploading your own hired-in plant insurance (HiPI) certificate.
- Can I hire a small cherry picker?
- Yes. Our smallest cherry pickers reach up to 13m working height, including compact electric and hybrid articulated booms, tracked spider lifts and towable trailer mounts. They are listed under Small cherry pickers on this page, smallest first, with the stowed width so you can check the way in.
- Articulated or telescopic: which do I need?
- Choose an articulated boom when you need to reach up and over something, such as a canopy, a parapet or plant. Choose a telescopic boom when the base has to stay well back and you need the longest straight reach.
- What IPAF category covers a cherry picker?
- Self-propelled articulated and telescopic booms are IPAF category 3b. Spider lifts and van, truck and trailer mounts are 1b. Each machine page shows its category.
- Can I hire a cherry picker with an operator?
- Yes. Operated hire is arranged by enquiry so we can check the site first. Tell us about the job and we will come back with a price.
