Jointed, up-and-over booms
Articulated boom lift hire
An articulated boom lift has a jointed arm, often with a short jib at the tip, so the platform can climb up, over and down the other side of an obstacle. It drives on site with the platform raised, within the limits on the machine. Pick your working height and up-and-over reach, then book online. Hire one for a few days or a few months, with the price shown before you add it to the basket.
Articulated booms are the machines most people mean by a cherry picker. Boom lift is the machine type; cherry picker is the everyday name for this jointed, up-and-over kind.

Questions
- Is an articulated boom lift a cherry picker?
- In everyday use, yes. Cherry picker is the everyday name for jointed, up-and-over booms, and an articulated boom lift is the classic example. Boom lift is the machine type, and it also covers straight telescopic booms, which are usually just called boom lifts.
- How much does articulated boom lift hire cost?
- Each machine page leads with the price for a week's hire, inc and ex VAT, and lists hires from 2 days in a table of prices by hire length. Delivery and collection are priced by your postcode before you pay. The optional damage waiver is included by default, and you can remove it by uploading your own hired-in plant insurance (HiPI) certificate.
- What IPAF category is an articulated boom lift?
- Self-propelled articulated and telescopic boom lifts are IPAF category 3b (mobile boom). Spider lifts and van, truck and trailer mounts work from outriggers and are category 1b. Each machine page shows its category.
- What does up and over mean?
- Up-and-over height is the highest point the boom can reach over before coming down the other side, for example over a canopy or parapet. Machine pages show it where the maker publishes it.
