Telescopic handlers for loads
Telehandler hire
A telehandler, or telescopic handler, is a rough terrain lift truck with a telescopic boom. It lifts loads on forks and places them at height or forward over obstacles: pallets onto scaffold, materials onto a roof, deliveries off a lorry on rough ground. Hire one by the day or the week, with the price on every machine before you book.
A telehandler is not a MEWP or a cherry picker. It is built to lift materials, not people, so IPAF cards do not cover it and it is not a substitute for an access platform.

Questions
- Is a telehandler a cherry picker?
- No. A cherry picker is a MEWP: a platform for people on a boom. A telehandler is a lift truck that carries loads on forks. If you need to work at height yourself, look at cherry pickers or scissor lifts instead.
- How much does telehandler hire cost?
- Each machine page leads with the price for a week's hire, inc and ex VAT, and lists hires from 2 days in a table of prices by hire length. Delivery and collection are priced by your postcode before you pay. The optional damage waiver is included by default, and you can remove it by uploading your own hired-in plant insurance (HiPI) certificate.
- How much can a telehandler lift?
- It depends on the machine and on how far the boom is extended and raised. Every telehandler has a load chart, and the safe load falls as the boom goes further out and higher. Ask us for the load chart of the machine you are hiring and check your heaviest load at the height and reach you need.
- What is the difference between a fixed and a rotating telehandler?
- A fixed telehandler has its boom on the chassis, so the machine is driven to face each load. A rotating telehandler has its boom on a turret that turns a full 360 degrees, and sets up on stabilisers (outriggers), so it can place loads all around itself without moving. Rotating telehandlers from 18m to 35m are priced on request: see rotating telehandler hire.
- What training does a telehandler operator need?
- Telehandlers are not MEWPs, so IPAF cards do not cover them. Operators must be trained and competent on telehandlers, which HSE's code of practice L117 covers. A CPCS A17 or NPORS C010 telehandler card is the usual proof on UK sites.
